Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, presented the outcome of their four-year project to model possible pathways for the EU chemical sector’s transition towards climate-neutrality and circularity on December 9th in Brussels. The “iC2050” model optimizes between different conversion pathways of renewable and circular feedstock to key industrial chemicals, for scenarios defined by different sets of constraints. Its objective function is to minimize the total Net Present Cost while meeting the greenhouse gas abatement and sustainable carbon targets. The main output for different policy scenarios and what-if scenarios is shown in terms of energy and feedstock requirement and total Net Present Cost.

After his keynote speech, the report was presented to Kurt Vandenberghe, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA). A panel discussion ensued with representatives from government, business, finance, society and technology. The discussion reflected on the need for market-pull and access to energy and feedstock. This would be necessary to define business cases that can unlock finance for capital projects that bring about the desired change.
